
The Canary Islands have been present at numerous prestigious international festivals and awards, with films featured in official competition as well as in industry areas, represented by professionals and companies from the sector.
Some of the events in which Canarian cinema has participated in 2026 include the Goya Awards, the Málaga Film Festival, and the Berlinale.
Goya Awards
Among the nominated Canarian films were: Norbert, for Best Animated Feature, co-produced by the Tenerife-based studio 3 Doubles and the support of the Canary Islands Government (Production 2021). Todos somos Gaza, nominated for Best Documentary Feature, produced by the Gran Canaria-based Videoreport Canarias SL and Fuerteventura-based Doc Land Canarias. Maspalomas, with 9 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, was partly shot on the iconic beach in the south of Gran Canaria.
Málaga Film Festival
The Archipelago was present at the 29th edition of the Málaga Film Festival, both competing in official and non-competitive sections.
El mapa para tocarte, by filmmaker Mercedes Afonso from La Palma, produced by Lunática Producciones won the Silver Biznaga for Best Documentary.
Cuántica Rave, directed by Paco L. Campano and co-produced by the Canarian company Insularia Films, competed In the official section. The film counts with the support of the Canary Islands Government (Minority co-production 2023).
In addition, more than thirty professionals attended MAFIZ—the festival’s industry area—where Canary Islands Film showcased the funding tools the Islands offer for audiovisual production, as well as their creative and industrial ecosystem.
Berlinale
Among the 22 films nominated at the 76th edition of the Berlinale was Rosebush Pruning, by Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz; a co-production in which Spain participated through the Canarian production company Sur-Film, internationally recognized for its experience as a service production company.
Likewise, Canary Islands Film organized a promotional event for the Islands’ film and audiovisual industry, attended by almost two hundred professionals.
Other international awards for Canarian films
The Canary Islands have received a large number of recognitions in the past months. Some of them, all counting with the support of the Canary Islands Government, include:
- Sugar Island, co-produced by Tinglado Film, won Best Film at the New York Latin American Film Festival.
- La Cosa en la Niebla, directed by Chedey Reyes (Jugoplastika) won 2 awards at Miami Sci-Fi International Film Festival.
- La lucha, directed by José Alayón (El Viaje Films) selected for the International Competition at BAFICI 2026 and screened at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
