Canarian productions at the 2025 Goya Awards

This year brought reasons to celebrate. At the latest edition of the Goya Awards, two productions with strong Canarian ties received top honours: the animated feature film Mariposas Negras, produced by Tinglado Film and directed by David Baute, and the animated short film Cafuné, produced by Damián Perea.

Mariposas Negras, a traditionally animated film reflecting on the devastating consequences of climate change, premiered at Annecy, was screened at Sitges, and recently won the Premio Forqué. It was supported by the Government of the Canary Islands and other public institutions.

Cafuné, produced by one of the most recognised figures in Canarian animation, explores the inner world of a refugee child through poetic visual storytelling.

In addition to these two awards, the Canary Islands were also represented among the nominees. The animated feature SuperKlaus, produced by 3 Doubles Producciones, was nominated alongside Mariposas Negras for Best Animated Film. Singer Valeria Castro received a nomination for Best Original Song with El Borde del Mundo, from the soundtrack of El 47. The film Memories of a Burning Body, nominated for Best Ibero-American Film, is represented by the Canarian sales agency Bendita Film Sales.
