The Canary Islands continue to promote original storytelling through two main initiatives: isLABentura Canarias and CreaDoc.
isLABentura Canarias, an international script development lab focused on stories inspired by the Canary Islands, has successfully completed three editions. Over this time, it has generated 42 fiction scripts based on the islands’ history and locations, fostering the professional growth of participating talent. As a result of their involvement in the program, nine professional contracts have been signed and four development grants awarded by the Canary Islands Government, confirming the program’s real impact in consolidating new audiovisual projects. Many of the selected projects have also gained recognition at prestigious international programs such as Rueda Academia de Cine and Incuba Galicia. Following the success of the previous editions, two projects are already in pre-production for 2025. In its latest edition, the program received a record 265 proposals from 21 countries, and 14 projects were selected to participate in a creative residency in El Hierro, working under the guidance of renowned international mentors. The results highlight the program’s capacity to foster high-quality projects with significant potential for future development.
CreaDoc, established in 2011, supports the development of creative documentaries from the Canary Islands. It offers a tailored mentoring program over approximately ten months, helping projects strengthen their narratives and prepare for the international market. So far, it has guided 40 documentary projects, including notable works such as En busca del Óscar by Octavio Guerra. In its latest edition, six new projects were selected, divided between the “Ópera Prima” and “Profesional” categories. Participants attended several face-to-face workshops in Tenerife, receiving personalized support from experienced professionals. Many projects developed within CreaDoc have gone on to achieve recognition and continue their creative journey beyond the program.
Both initiatives reaffirm the Canary Islands’ commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting original audiovisual content internationally, while also contributing to the creation of projects with long-term projection and tangible professional outcomes.
