The Canary Islands have positioned themselves as an important global center in the animation industry. In the last eight years it has gone from two animation studios and 29 people working to more than fifteen studios and an average of 800 jobs per year.
Variety, the leading magazine in Hollywood, points to the Spanish animation industry as one of the main poles of global growth. Highlighting the presence of the studios located in the Canary Islands:
Fortiche, based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the studio in charge of Arcane, the action and adventure series distributed by Netflix based on the legendary video game League of Legends.
Atlantis Animation, based in Tenerife since 2019, has worked on the production of series such as Tara Duncan for Disney TV or Miraculous Ladybug S5.
Animation studio originally from Tenerife, 3Doubles produces the Spanish-Canadian adventure comedy SuperKlaus, and is developing Heidi: The Lynx Rescue.
But the Canary Islands have many more studies, such as: Amuse Studios, Ánima Kitchent, Arx Anima, Big Canaria, Birdland, B-Water Studios, Dare Planet Studios, Glaboo Studios, Glassfrog Studios, Koyi Talent, La Casa Animada, La Créme Films, Mondo TV Studios, Perruncho, Tomavision, Windlanders Film.
The Canary Islands also have festivals that promote the world of animation: Animayo, the only animation festival in Spain designated “Qualifying Festival” by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the Oscars. And Quirino Awards, a festival to recognize talent in the Ibero-American animation industry, generating ties and networks between both sides of the ocean.
